A New Chapter : Welcome to Unruly & Unknown
The next step in the evolution of the Baroque & Unknown Salon Series {{ because sometimes you have to be a little unruly to be remembered }}.
Dear Music-Loving Friend,
If you joined us for the Baroque and Unknown Salon Series in Fall of 2024, you experienced how powerful it can be to gather in a room and uncover the stories of forgotten artists.
Over the course of two, intimate, October evenings, we shared music by forgotten Baroque women composers, heard lectures from leading Musicologists, Teachers, and Artists, and witnessed how storytelling, scholarship, and performance can bring history to life.

The ripple effects were immediate and deeply moving, from gathering as a community to watch a local High School student perform in public for the first time, to local collaborators discovering new artistic inspiration through the lives of forgotten composers, to the Producers of the event engaging in storytelling through song.
What began as a performance series quickly became a space for mentorship, curiosity, and community, a lovely reminder that history is most exciting when we learn it together.
We are thrilled to share where the journey is headed next…
Introducing Unruly and Unknown… the podcast
Unruly and Unknown is the new podcast and digital project inspired by the magic of those original evenings. We’re sharing the lectures, the behind-the-scenes planning and expanding beyond the Baroque era to start sharing deeper, richer stories of artists, particularly women and marginalized creatives, who had to challenge the systems around them in order to create.
Some were censored. Some were erased. All were brilliant. And many, like us, had to be a little unruly to make their voices heard.
The First Episode Launches Monday, July 14th
The podcast will begin with a personal reflection on how this all started, featuring voices you may remember from the salon series, followed by deep-dives and incredible stories about the music of Vittoria Alleoti, also known as Raffaella Aleotti, Francesca Caccini, Barbara Strozzi and more composers you’ve likely never heard of before.
Facing Challenging Times with More Art
As we face a uniquely discouraging time in arts funding, this project is a small but persistent act of resistance.
It’s a reminder that art does matter and stories do survive, as long as we intentionally create community together.
We’re proud to be supported by the Arts Council for Monterey County, Dulcamara Press and to have partnered with Boulanger Initiative to launch this fantastic work.
Who is this for?
This podcast is for you — the curious, the creative, the ones who seek the unknown.
